As a Baseball Coach, Tim Turner preached being mentally tough. It was that toughness that propelled his Broadway teams to success at every level. For Coach Turner, the Broadway Baseball journey started long before the bright lights at Broadway High School, his journey started on the Little League dirt in the Broadway Community Little League.
To this very day, Tim Turner's name adorns the walls of The Strike Zone, the BCLL training facility in Timberville. Joined by the names of his players, Coach Turner led countless BCLL teams to success for many years. As many of those players grew, Coach Turner climbed the ranks with him, with many of his long-time assistant coaches by his side. Eventually, Coach Turner was named the JV Baseball Coach at Broadway High School and continued that ascent to the top of the BHS Varsity coaching ranks. Joined by many of those same players, and adding new faces, Coach Turner pushed the Gobblers Baseball program to new heights of success. In 2017, the Gobblers were Conference 29 Champions, advancing to the Region 3C Tournament. The Gobblers appeared again in the Region Tournament in 2019 where they were just five outs away from a State Tournament berth. As the 2020 season approached, the Gobblers Baseball team looked like a regional favorite and a possible State Championship contender, but before the first pitch could be thrown the entire Spring season was shut down due to the COVID Pandemic. Not to be deterred, Coach Turner and his staff reignited the fire and made another run to the Region 3C Championship game in the COVID-Shortened 2021 season. In 2022, Coach Turner would again advance to the Region 3C Tournament, falling just short of the State Tournament. Just three years later, having retired from Coaching at BHS, Tim Turner will now turn that mental toughness towards a new fight. In March of 2025 Tim was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS (baseball fans also know this as Lou Gehrig's Disease). While Tim remains focused and positive, the entire community now turns our attention to helping Tim and his family. This disease comes with additional costs to maintaining a safe household environment, needs for new transportation methods to accommodate a wheelchair and other mounting needs. On May 20, during a ceremony at a Broadway High School baseball game, a fundraising effort to help the family during this time of need was started. George Laase (BHS Baseball Coach), Becky Cantrell (BHS Softball Coach), Danny Grogg (BHS Football Coach), Micah Morris (Gobblers Sports Network Owner/Broadcaster) and many other have stepped up to begin working on honoring Coach Turner and starting the fundraising efforts to assist this man, and this family that have been so important to the fabric of the Broadway community for so many years. All money donated will be given to Coach Turner and his family to help them with the mounting needs associated with this disease. "We want to spread awareness of this disease so that one day there will be a cure." -Robin Turner, Tim Turner's Wife. |
Coach Turner Was Always More than a coach
Reflection by Ben Elliott
As many of you know, former BHS baseball coach Tim Turner, announced back in March that he was diagnosed with ALS. This announcement rocked the sports family here at BHS. As you all know, I have a deep love for Tim, he gave me my first shot to be a part of a high school sports team, and treated me with utmost kindness, love and respect. Which to this day, means a lot to me. I learned more from him than I could ever express. I modeled my coaching ethos after him, because everyone who knows me knows, I have the passion and intensity of Kevin Garnett and DMX, which isn’t inherently a bad thing, but when you’re a coach, you can’t always be that. I learned to be even-keel from him. He helped me so much in my coaching journey. Watching him get a surprise induction into the BHS Athletics Hall of Fame during our senior night baseball game, was a moment I’ll never forget. The road ahead will be challenging, but, if there’s anything I know about Tim, it’s this.
He’s a smooth operator, cool in the face of pressure. So cool, that it’d make Joe Montana flinch. He always tells me how much he loves me, and how much he loves this blog. Those words have helped me in the toughest of times. So I ask you, the dear reader today, please give anything you can, anything helps. And if you cannot give monetarily, tell someone close to you you love them. To me, that is what coach Turner is all about. Very good at telling his loved ones how much they mean to him. That’s the number 1 lesson I’ll take from him. If you get one thing out of reading this, I would hope it’d be a reminder, to tell someone you love them today.
